1. Free Fire

Garena Free Fire (also known as Free Fire Battlegrounds or Free Fire) is an online multiplayer battle royale game, developed by 111 Dots Studio and published by Garena for Android and iOS. It became the most downloaded mobile game of 2019, due to its popularity, the game received the award for “Best Popular Vote Game” by the Google Play Store in 2019. As of November, 2019, Free Fire has grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Garena is currently working on an enhanced version of Free Fire which will be called Free Fire Max.

Garena Free Fire is an online-only action-adventure battle royale game played in a third person perspective. The game consists of up to 50 players falling from a parachute on an island in search of weapons and equipment to kill the other players. Players are free to choose their starting position, take weapons and supplies to extend battle life.

When the player joins a game, they will enter a plane, which will fly over the play island. While the plane is flying over the island the player can jump where they want, thus allowing them to choose a strategic place to land away from enemies. After landing, the player must then go looking for weapons and utility items. Medical equipment, medium and large weapons, grenades, and other items featured can be found throughout the island. The ultimate goal of the player is to survive on an island with a maximum of 50-51 players online; this requires eliminating all opponents the player encounters along the way and ensuring that they are the only survivor remaining. The available safe area of the game’s map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round.

2. Call of Duty: Mobile

Call of Duty: Mobile is a free-to-play first-person shooter developed by TiMi Studios and published by Activision for Android and iOS. It was released on October 1, 2019. In its first month, the game had over 148 million downloads and generated nearly US$54 million in revenue, making it one of the largest mobile game launch in history. As of June 2020, the game has over 250 million downloads.

Players can choose to play ranked or non-ranked matches in multiplayer mode. It has two types of in-game currencies: Credits(C), which are earned through playing the game, and COD Points(CP), which have to be bought with real world money. It is possible to play the full game without paying, however, some exclusive character and weapon skins can only be bought with COD Points. Apart from standard matchmaking, a private room for both the multiplayer and battle royale modes can also be accessed where players can invite and battle with just their in-game friends. Additionally, the game features special and limited multiplayer modes that may last for days, weeks, or a whole game season. These include: Prop Hunt, Rapid Fire, Sticks and Stones, 2v2, Capture the Flag, One Shot One Kill, Snipers Only, and Gun Game, among others.

The Zombies mode was added in Season 2 (November 2019). It placed teams of players against zombies that attacked in waves. The game takes place on the Shi No Numa (Swamp of Death) map from Call of Duty: World at War. It is playable in Endless Survival Mode, which runs like the classic zombies experience, and Raid Mode, which throws a set number of waves at the players before transitioning to a boss encounter. The players can choose whether to play it on normal or heroic difficulty. In Raid Mode, the selected difficulty will mean the difference between fighting through waves of zombies. The mode was removed in March 2020 due to it not reaching the level of quality desired, according to Activision.

3. Call of Duty: Warzone

Call of Duty: Warzone is a free-to-play battle royale video game released on March 10, 2020, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows. The game is a part of the 2019 title Call of Duty: Modern Warfare but does not require purchase of it. Warzone was developed by Infinity Ward and Raven Software and published by Activision. Warzone allows online multiplayer combat among 150 players set in the fictional city of Verdansk, which is loosely based on Donetsk city in Eastern Ukraine, on day 96 of Operation: Rapid Sunder. The game features both cross-platform play and cross-platform progression between both games.

Warzone features three primary game modes: Battle Royale, Realism and Plunder. It is the second main battle royale installment in the Call of Duty franchise, following the “Blackout” mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018). Warzone differs from Black Ops 4 by reducing reliance on equipable gadgets and instead encouraging the accumulation of a new in-game currency called Cash. Warzone supports up to 150 players in a single match, which exceeds the typical size of 100 players seen in other battle royale titles.

The Battle Royale mode is similar to other titles in the genre where players compete in a continuously shrinking map to be the last player remaining. Players parachute onto a large game map, where they encounter other players. As the game progresses and players are eliminated, the playable area shrinks forcing the remaining players into tighter spaces. In Warzone, the non-playable areas become contaminated with a green gas that depletes health and eventually kills the player if they do not return to the safe playable area.Unlike other titles, Warzone introduces a new respawn mechanic, a greater emphasis on vehicles, and a new in-game currency mechanic. Parachuting is unrestricted, with the player being allowed to open and cut their parachute an unlimited number of times while in air. At launch, the game supported trios of up to three players with an option to disable squad filling. Infinity Ward has mentioned testing the number of squad members in future updates. Four-player squads and Solo BR modes were added in following updates, while Duos was added near the end of Season 3.
